Actor Vinu Chakravarthy, who had said that Vidya Balan’s 'The Dirty Picture' was a distorted version of Silk Smitha’s life and announced of his plans to make a film on Silk Smitha as a bio-pic to let the world know about the late sexy siren.

Vinu Chakravarthy is reported to have said that several real facts have been twisted to commercialize the film and the true essence of Silk Smitha’s life and what she underwent really was not shown in the film.

Die hard fans of the late siren Silk Smitha can now expect another film on her very soon as the work towards beginning this project has started rolling already.

Riding high on the success of The Dirty Picture, actress Vidya Balan, who has taken everyone by surprise with her bold portrayal of the role, inspired by late South sex siren 'Silk Smitha', says the reigning Khans of Bollywood can now use 'Balan' as a suffix to their names.

"I feel blessed for so much of appreciation and gratitude. I am happy that I got the chance to work with good directors and I should not take credit for it. I have never been part of any race for the number one position or anything of that sort," Vidya told reporters here.

"It feels good that people are saying that The Dirty Picture is not dirty. The film is a huge landmark for me," she said.

On being asked is she is the new female Khan in the industry, Vidya chuckled, "Well, the Khans can now add Balan at the end of their names, instead of me adding Khan to my name."

Reportedly, Kareena Kapoor also intends to get 'dirty' with her upcoming film, Heroine, to which Vidya says, "I don't think anyone can get dirty like this."

On whether she is the female version of Bollywood's serial kisser Emraan Hashmi, Vidya says, "The idea is not bad. If girls are trying to outdo boys in all areas then why not in this way."

Actress Vidya Balan, who essays the role inspired by southern sexy siren Silk Smitha in her forthcoming film 'The Dirty Picture', says, as Silk was bold and fearless, she was exploited in a wrong way.

The Milan Luthria directed movie chronicles the life of controversial South Indian actress Vijayalaxmi, popularly known as Silk Smitha.

"In real life, Silk was very very ahead of her time. She took pride in what she did and was never ashamed in what she was doing. Silk was bindaas, fearless, open and wanted to live to the fullest. She believed in taking every opportunity and living every moment and was not bothered about what people talk or think. There was some childishness in her but she was fearless," revealed Vidya Balan in an interview with Celebs Factory.

"People think Silk was bold only because she used to dress up or pose in certain way, but this was one part of her fearlessness. Some even felt she was shameless but I don't think she was. Today, girls are in complete command of their life and sexuality. They are unapologetic and take pride in whatever they do. Silk was like that even back then. And which is why she was misunderstood and people exploited that in a wrong way," she said.

Vijayalaxmi reached the iconic status of a sex symbol in Tamil cinema during her time. Appearing in over 200 films, the young seductress was neck deep in controversies and eventually died at the age of 33. It is suspected that she commited suicide. The movie goes back into the era of 1980s, especially in Tamil films and shows the highs and lows of a dancing star. The award winning actress says the film is not based on Silk Smitha's life but is inspired by her.

"The film is not based on Silk Smitha but is inspired by her life. It is about a dancing star. Dancing stars were popular back then in 1980s and Silk was number one in that period. There were other colleagues of Silk like Disco Shanti, Nylon Nandini, Polyester Padmini and others but Silk was first of her kind. Hence, the name of the film character is Silk," said Vidya.

The Dirty Picture may have managed to excite the movie buffs but it now looks like troubled times are coming up for the makers of the film.

Silk Smitha's brother V Naga Vara Prasad has accused Ekta Kapoor and Milan Luthria, the makers of The Dirty Picture, of making a film on Silk Smitha's life without her family's consent. They have also called the film 'obscene' and have sent a legal notice to the team.

Team Dirty Picture is yet to respond to the notice.

The Dirty Picture has caused Vidya Balan to be a hot topic in the media with an avatar that has never been seen on Vidya before. As the pictures began to surface of the star playing Silk Smitha in the biopic, fans began to gasp in interest. The hype only increased further with the releases of the trailer and song ‘Ooh La La’ and continues to rise as the films release date of December 2nd creeps ever closer. While Vidya is impressing her audiences with new roles, her level of professionalism remains unchanged, which has not gone unnoticed by director Milan Luthria.

The Dirty Picture director, who also directed Once Upon A Time in Mumbai says, “I am blown over by Vidya’s professionalism. Honestly in my 20 odd years in Bollywood I am yet to come across someone as dedicated as Vidya. She does one film at a time, gets beneath the skin of the character and gives a performance so nuanced that she blows your mind. Making a biopic is very hard but if your protagonist shows the levels of commitment that Vidya does, then you can attain the heights you seek.”

At the beginning of the month it appeared that all the effort had taken its toll on the South Indian actress who checked into hospital after complaints of headaches and lack of appetite. Unknown to many at that time, Vidya had been advised by doctors to take a prolonged leave of absence which was supported by her family. Vidya appears to have other plans as Tanuj Garg co-producer at Balaji Films confirms, “Vidya just gave herself a few days off and is back on the sets of The Dirty Picture. We are currently shooting a song with her and Emraan. Vidya knows that The Dirty Picture is to release on December 2 and she is shooting and dubbing simultaneously to help us meet the deadline.”

Vidya’s work ethic has kept the team worrying about her recent health scare as Tanuj says, “Even we didn’t want Vidya to start work without feeling better. For us, our actor’s health is of paramount importance.” The team however have taken no chances and taken all precautionary steps to ensure that their star is as comfortable as possible. “We have instructed the production unit to make sure that a doctor is on the sets. Even when Vidya does the multi-city promotional tour (mid-November onwards), we will make sure that a doctor from the particular city is on call,” adds Tanuj but stresses there is nothing to worry about as Vidya is being very co-operative and taking the team’s advice.

The most recent track release, ‘Ishq Sufiyana’, is a love ballad between Vidya’s character Silk Smitha, and co star Emraan Hashmi’s character, which is still to be confirmed but is rumored to be based upon Mahesh Bhatt.

Vidya Balan, who seems to have mastered the act of seduction in The Dirty Picture says that the film celebrates womanhood in all its glory.

Speaking to The Times of India, Vidya Balan said, “I've never enjoyed being a woman more than in The Dirty Picture. It celebrates a woman like a rainbow in all her colours.”

Vidya Balan was initially very surprised when director Milan Luthria approached her with a character like this.

However, Vidya, who always believed in portraying various shades of human emotions has absolutely no regret in playing such a bold and unusual character in The Dirty Picture.

Vidya said, “Before starting this film, I told Milan that I want you to hold my hands and guide me through the film. I just knew that I had to trust Milan completely. And I can say it is so worth it.”

Vidya Balan is anxiously looking forward to the release of The Dirty Picture in which she has essayed the role of yesteryear sex symbol Silk Smitha.

The second trailer of producer Ekta Kapoor’s film The Dirty Picture got stuck with the Censor Board over an explicit lovemaking scene between Vidya Balan and Naseeruddin Shah.

Director Milan Luthria seems to have vowed to shock the movie buffs. If the teasers and stills of Vidya Balan dressed in blouses with plunging necklines was not enough, the second trailer of The Dirty Picture packed a steamy love scene between Vidya and Naseeruddin Shah. In the scene, the two make love inside a car.

When the trailer was sent for clearance from the Censor Board, objections were raised to the aforementioned scene and a few dialogues.

The Censor Board felt the trailer was not suitable for viewing by family audience and hence decided to give it an A (Adults Only) certificate. However, the makers wanted a U/A certificate so that the trailer can be screened with films like Mausam.

The Dirty Picture - uncensored trailer

Actor Vidya Balan’s classic Indian look made her the perfect choice to portray the role of southern siren, Silk Smitha in the upcoming biopic, The Dirty Picture, says director Milan Luthria.

“We were looking for a strong performer and not someone who could merely look sexy and Vidya is a great actor. Also, she has the body of a classic voluptuous Indian beauty, something not many Bollywood actor can boast of,” says Luthria.

The director also informs that a lot has gone into transforming Balan into Silk Smitha. “It requires a great effort to present a lady in a manner that looks sensuous but not vulgar. The fact that she can hold that innocent expression despite being a part of a bold scene is a facet of great actors,” he says.

Luthria, however, admits that the 33-year-old actor had certain inhibitions when she first started shooting the film. “It wasn’t easy for Vidya on the first day. She was an absolute professional in front of the camera but behind the scenes there was much mental conditioning she had to engage in, before stepping out on the sets in those shocking costumes,” he adds.

Vidya Balan’s popularity in the Tamil film industry is soaring high following her role as the late seductress Silk Smitha in the upcoming Hindi film The Dirty Picture.

The Dirty Picture, a biopic on the late glam doll Silk Smitha has Vidya Balan enacting the sex goddess and movie buffs are eager to see her performan as she has shed a lot more than just her inhibitions to become this sex icon that she has become even before the film's release.

Sensing that Vidya Balan has a huge market in Tamil Nadu and can have the cash registers ringing, several producers in Kollywood are vying to sign her up. But Vidya Balan has no time for Tamil movies as she has a line-up of Hindi flicks to be produced by prestigious production houses in Bollywood.

If sources are to be believed Vidya might soon be a part of a Kollywood project if everything falls right into places.

The trailer of The Dirty Picture, a biopic on Silk Smita starring Vidya Balan is out and is creating waves across the country. Since Silk Smita was one of the original sex symbols it was not surprising to see Vidya Balan in creations designed to showcase her sex appeal.

Word leaked out that Naseerudin Shah's character portrayed in the trailer as a man who lusts after Silk Smita is inspired from Rajinikanth who has done a few films with the sultry siren back in the day. Rajini's fans of course have been in a fury ever since and are threatening the makers with violence.

The producers are dismissive about such reports saying that the fans are overreacting since Naseerudin plays an ageing star in the film whereas Rajini was in his prime when he worked with Silk Smita.

The first look for Vidya Balan's highly anticipated movie, The Dirty Picture, is out!

The film, based on the life of southern siren Silk Smitha, features Vidya as the late star. The Dirty Picture also stars Naseeruddin Shah, Emraan Hashmi and Tusshar Kapoor.

Directed by Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai helmer Milan Luthria, The Dirty Picture is apparently loaded with sensuous scenes and songs; Silk Smitha, after all, was instrumental in bringing the indigenous adult entertainment industry to the fore.

When Ragini MMS was up for release, Ekta Kapoor said that she wanted to release it on Friday, the 13th, for the date is synonymous with scary spirits.

And when it comes to the release of her next film Dirty Picture, there is another significant date under consideration. We've learnt that the movie, which stars Vidya Balan as the south siren Silk Smitha, will release on December 2, which happens to be Silk Smitha's birthday.

A source says, "Silk Smitha was the biggest sensation down south and was known for her bold and daring erotica on celluloid. At a point, filmmakers could not imagine releasing a film without a titillating song or cameo by Silk. She was every filmmaker's lucky charm. So, the film is being released on her birthday only to pay tribute to her."

Vidya Balan redefines 'smoking hot' in her own special way. The 33-year-old actor had to smoke up to ten cigarettes for a scene in her upcoming film Dirty Picture. In the film, Vidya plays a popular actress who lives a tragic life and dies a lonely death. "While shooting in Hyderabad, Vidya had to actually smoke for a scene. By the fourth cigarette, Vidya, a non-smoker, began to feel uneasy and was overcome with a coughing fit," reports Mumbai Mirror.

The shooting had to be stopped for Vidya to regain her composure.

After Vidya was back on set, director Milan Luthria gave the go-ahead to resume shooting.

As luck would have it, and after multiple re-takes, Vidya was ten cigarettes down.

Dirty Picture is based on the life of South sex-icon, Silk Smitha. Smitha was a popular item girl and sex symbol, who enthralled millions. The actor was found dead in her Chennai apartment in 1996.

Vidya is clearly a dedicated actor. She is reportedly experimenting with her look in the film. She is also making some changes on the personal front to convincingly pull off this character.

Milan insisted on non-smoker Vidya actually smoking for the film to keep things real. And professional Vidya stepped up without complaints.

It is well known that actress Vidya Balan is playing the South Indian sex siren Silk Smitha in her upcoming biopic titled The Dirty Picture.

Currently, the Bollywood star is busy shooting with Emraan Hashmi for director Milan Luthria`s movie in Hyderabad.

Now, rumours are abuzz that she does not want to wear sleeveless tops for the flick.

Vidya Balan is fully aware of the sexy image of Silk Smitha and she does not have any problem in breaking away from her demure persona to emulate the sexy actress.

Bollywood legend Naseeruddin Shah clarified that he is not imitating Rajinikanth in The Dirty Picture, a film chronicling the life of the late sex icon Silk Smitha.

The actor clarifies, “I am not playing Rajnikanth in the film I’m simply portraying an ageing superstar, modelled on many people. I will be using my own observations of Hindi stars for the part, since I am not very familiar with most of the southern actors.”

Talking of south Indian actors, we asked him about sharing screen space with actress Sneha, who is to make her Bollywood debut in the movie Mad Dad, alongside him.

Vidya Balan has never been a sexy siren. Despite locking lips with her male co-stars and even mouthing dialogues seasoned with choicest of expletives, Vidya has remained the typical demure, sari-clad lady one would take home to meet their mom. Not for her the trappings of a sex bomb.

But Vidya has defied the stereotypes and shocked her fans by taking up the role of Silk Smitha in director Milan Luthria’s film Dirty Picture.

For the uninitiated, Silk Smitha was the undisputed siren of the south film industry in the 80s and 90s, popular for her dare-to-bare acts in a number of films. Her plump, curvy body which she revealed without inhibitions was her drawcard.

Now, Dirty Picture, based on the tragic life of Silk Smitha, pitches Vidya Balan as the seductress, dressed in skimpy blouses and thigh-baring ghagras. The first glimpse of Vidya’s makeover as Silk Smitha came out recently, and has been met with mixed reactions from film buffs.

Some feel Vidya isn’t plump and curvy enough to play Silk Smitha, while the others have wholeheartedly approved of Vidya as the siren.

Let us know your opinion. Who according to you looks hotter -- Vidya Balan or Silk Smitha?

Director Milan Luthria has come up with an innovative way to clear Vidya Balan's apprehension over her bold and sexy role in Dirty Picture, turning into soft porn. He advised Vidya to watch films such as Chicago and Burlesque which portray women with strong and overtly sexual body language.

"I loved the script and was almost shocked that they (Milan and Balaji) thought of me. I was shocked and thrilled because she is so unlike me. Silk Smitha's sexuality is in your face. It is almost offensive," Balan said in an interview.

"Dirty Picture is an apt title for the movie. It is reflective of our perception of her. We feel that she could not have made a pretty picture," she added.

Famous for her bold roles on screen, off screen, Silk Smitha's life was bereft of glamour. Rather, there was loneliness and tragedy.

She went on to star in over 200 Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and a few Hindi films. Her disillusionment in love finally got to her as she was found dead in her apartment in Chennai in 1996.

While many claimed that her death was a suicide, concluding from the note she left behind, the real reason behind her death still remains a mystery.

Vidya Balan needs to become more comfortable in her own skin on screen, according to the director of her upcoming film Dirty Picture.

The actress is known for her love of more traditional roles in films such as the crime drama Ishqiya.

According to the Mumbai Mirror, she was shocked when she received her wardrobe for the film, which turned out to be full of skimpy outfits.

Helmer Milan Luthria told the paper: "Vidya Balan needs to get bolder in her performance and physicality. Bolder in body and in mind.

"This is not kid stuff we are doing. My film takes a naked look at all we've been whispering about."

Dirty Picture will see Balan playing the tragic South Indian actress Silk Smitha, who was famous for her "sensual" dances.

It was reported last month she planned to sue over doctored pictures of her in a bikini posing on a fake Maxim cover.

But soon her screen-image is going to undergo a sea-change. She is about to star in the role of South porn star, Silk Smitha, who was renowned for her alluring, skin-showing act.

To be directed by Milan Luthria, ‘Dirty Picture’ has already created much hype in the industry. The film stars Vidya Balan as the South siren Silk Smitha, while Naseruddin Shah, Emraan Hashmi, and Tusshar Kapoor star in other lead roles.

With low necklines and hot pants, Vidya will look dirtier
While portraying a porn star aesthetically, Vidya Balan might have to do away with some of her inhibitions on-screen. Without much doubt, ‘Dirty Picture’ will have ample skin show where the costumes will be short and quite revealing.

The initial sketches for Vidya’s costumes include hot pants, low necklines, and petticoats.

Niharika Khan, who has designed Vidya’s costumes said, “There is bound to be a lot of skin show where her legs and stomach will be bare. The role has a graph where initially she will be wearing her usual clothes, later she becomes a star and then the downfall. So it's an array of costumes I am preparing covering all three phases.”

Vidya needs to get bolder in mind and body
While researching for the role of a porn star, Vidya Balan confesses that she is not at all a porn enthusiast as she believes porn is more of a guy thing.

To fit the role perfectly, the scipt requires Vidya to put on extra pounds. Playing a porn star can be a hard task, but Vidya is very confident of her acting skills. She said, “It will be my interpretation, not an impersonation.”

Director Milan Luthria feels Vidya needs to be more daring to do justice to the role of a porn star.

Luthria said, “Vidya Balan needs to get bolder in her performance and physicality. This is not kid stuff we are doing. My film takes a naked look at all we've been whispering about.”

Vidya Balan has been collecting Best Actor trophies for her portrayal as Krishna in Ishqiya at several recent film award ceremonies. From April, she starts shooting for Ekta Kapoor’s The Dirty Picture, in which she plays soft porn queen, Vijaylakshmi aka Silk Smitha, who worked in over 200 Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi films before she was found dead in her Chennai apartment.

Her untimely death in 1996 was attributed to financial problems, disillusionment with love and alcohol. But in her short career, Silk Smitha became a cult figure with films like Moondru Mugam (1982) and Layanam (1989), that had her playing a bikini-clad super agent beating up king-size thugs.

“This film takes me into unexplored territory and I am pinning my hopes on Milan (director Milan Luthria) to carry me through what promises to be one of my most challenging roles ever,” admits Balan, who will reportedly get up close and personal with Tusshar Kapoor and Naseeruddin Shah. She has already shared some intimate on-screen moments with Naseer in Ishqiya last year.

“I can’t thank him enough for being such a rock during Ishqiya and am looking forward to working with Naseer saab again. I’m as excited and nervous as a schoolgirl but am sure I will be far more comfortable with him this time after having seen the chemistry in Ishqiya.”

Balan has also been asked to put on a few extra kilos so she can look as voluptuous as the south Indian actor. “These days, everyone from my director to my stylists have been telling me to stop dieting and start eating more. Silk Smitha wasn’t exactly reed thin,” she smiles, quickly adding that her character will be Luthria’s interpretation of the actor.

“Sabrina, my character in No One Killed Jessica was a very fulfilling experience as an actor, given that it was modelled on such a strong real-life personality (slain model Jessica Lall’s sister Sabrina). So was Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahani, which I filmed at a stretch in Kolkata last year, and has me playing a pregnant woman on a revenge trail. But The Dirty Picture is another story altogether. Like everyone else, I’m wondering what Milan’s Silk Smitha will eventually turn out to be like.”
