DOP Santosh Sivan honored..

Santhosh Sivan, cinematographer par excellence has done the country proud by becoming the first Director Of Photography (DOP) to receive a coveted membership from the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC).

Santosh Sivan is the first person from the Asia Pacific region to have received this honor.

The membership with ASC is a towering achievement in cinematography and is the top accolade that can be conferred towards a cinematographer.

Santhosh Sivan said that it was a dream come true and thanked his directors like Mani Ratnam and Priyadharshan for believing in him.

While Celebrities like K.V Anand, A.R Murugadoss and Ravi K. Chandran have been congratulating Santhosh Sivan and Celebs Factory joins them most heartily in congratulating him of his stupendous achievement.

Mani Ratnam and ARR for Kadal

Mani Ratnam’s Kadal is progressing well and actors are beaming about the scenic beauty of the location, Manapad, the sea village in Thoothukudi.

Isai Puyal Rahman is scoring the music for the film and the musician has shared a rare picture, featuring him along with the ace director Mani Ratnam. AR Rahman has updated about the picture, “While brainstorming with Mani Ratnam in the middle of the sea, down in the south of India.”

In the same manner actor Arvind Swamy who is also part of the cast has updated, “On location for Kadal…the sea looks beautiful.” Hope the magic of Roja continues in Kadal too as it marks the coming together of Mani Ratnam, AR Rahman and Arvind Swamy.

The film’s shooting started on March 5 and has Gautham, son of Karthik and actress Samantha in the lead. The film also has Lakshmi Manchu, veteran Telugu actor Mohan Babu’s daughter, who is making her Tamil debut. Arjun and Thambi Ramiah are also part of the cast.

Sources say that Priyamani has been roped in to play Riteish Deshmukh’s leading lady in a Hindi film.

After Mani Ratnam's Raavan, Priyamani has been looking for a good opportunity to make a mark in Bollywood and the actor seems to have found a good opportunity in a script narrated by Chandrakant Singh, says sources close to her.

Priyamani currently has a couple of Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada projects on hands and will move over to this Hindi flick as soon as her presence is required there.

Sources in the Tinsel Town say that Veteran Director Mani Ratnam had signed up Lakshmi Manchu, daughter of Tollywood star Mohan Babu for his upcoming film.

Lakshmi Manchu has acted in several Telugu films and is has also produced many Telugu films. She is now reportedly been signed for a prominent role in the film that Mani Ratnam is to direct, reports sources.

Further, there are rumors that Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor may play the female lead in the film. However, there is no official confirmation on this yet, either from the director or from the actress.

Actor Arjun, Who is often referred to as 'The Action king' ever since he started his film career at the age of 19 is still going strong as a hero. True to his title "The Action King," the actor has taken a daring step and has agreed to play a compelling antagonist in maverick filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s upcoming Tamil venture, Pookadai.

As reported earlier, Veteran actor Karthik's son Gautam would be debuting as the lead actor through Pookadai with Action King Arjun as his Villain.

"Unlike The Action King’s role in the recent Ajith starrer Mankatha, Arjun would be seen in powerful negative role with an all-new, surprising look in Mani Ratnam’s flick," revealed the source and added that there are only five major characters in Pookadai including Arjun, Gowtam and his female lead, who is yet to be finalized."

Pookadai would have ace cinematographer Rajeev Menon will be behind the camera with Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman scoring the music. The movie is expected to be a romantic story set against the backdrop of the fishermen in Rameswaram.

The guessing games for the female lead in Mani Ratnam's next seems to have not come to an end, as the filmmaker is yet to find a new face for his forthcoming multilingual movie.

After unsuccessful attempts to introduce Akshara Hassan (Kamal Hassan's daughter) and Tulasi (Radha's daughter), the director is now thinking to rope in Parthiban's daughter P.S Keerthana.

"Mani Ratnam has short-listed a few names and that also has Keethana's, as he believes that she can fit the bill. However Keerthana is yet to approached for this," revealed the sources.

Though the Keerthana is not very popular, she has become a familiar face as she is often spotted at many cinema related functions like audio release, music launch and première shows.

It is to be noted that the actress has worked with Mani Ratnam before for his earlier film Kannathil Muthamittal as a child artist, that bagged her a National Award.

However, on Akshara Hassan and Tulasi's decisions to opt out of the film, sources claim that the former is currently concentrating on her filmmaking career and in the latter's case, her mother Radha is only keen on stabilising her elder daughter Karthika's career for now.

Meanwhile, Karthik’s son Gautham, the upcoming actor is visiting Chennai frequently for screen tests and is preparing for his role with a lot of hopes that launches him as an actor in a Mani Ratnam film.

Maniratnam's Next ?

Ponniyin Selvan that was scheduled to have been directed by Mani Ratnam may have been a non-starter but that has not deterred the legendary filmmaker, who is all set to begin work on a fresh project.

It has been confirmed that Arya and Karthik's son, Gautam will be the male leads.

There was some confusion over this, as friends and well-wishers of Arya felt that he was doing too many multi-starrers and he should concentrate on solo hero projects.

Arya has readily accepted this offer considering the great Maniratnam as an exception and has put all speculations to rest.

Now if they would only announce the heroines!

The news about Mani Ratnam’s ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ shelved has disappointed the fans of Vijay and Mahesh Babu. However, Mani Ratnam’s team members are reportedly happy that he didn’t involve in the project that is profitably not viable.

The latest we hear from the closer sources is Mani Ratnam is glimpsing through three different scripts that he had crafted before the completion of ‘Raavanan’. It looks like his next preference is a breezy rom-com starring newcomers in lead roles. The inside reports mention that audition for new faces is going on at initial levels. However, the technical team will have P.C. Sriram and A.R. Rahman, who are considered as the lucky factors of Mani Ratnam’s films.

Bollywood Offers

Priyamani says that she is still trying to get good offers from Bollywood and while speaking about this, she said,” I am currently acting in Telugu and Kannada films. I will also be acting in two more Telugu films and talks are going on with regard to this."

The films 'Vishnuvardhana' and 'Lakshmi' in Kannada that has Priyamani as the female lead role are getting delayed. She stated that the films are not delayed because of her and The shooting of these films will commence soon.

She mentioned of her acting skills that were noticed by an audience worldwide in Maniratnam's Raavan despite of the film's fate at the box office and mentioned that the Hindi audience enjoyed her acting.

Having said that she also mentioned about her role opposite Suriya in Ram Gopal Varma’s Raktha Charithra II that did not reach the audience as expected.

"Many are asking me about not continuing to act in more Hindi films. Though I am acting in South Indian languages, I am making efforts to get offers in Hindi. I am just waiting for good roles.” she added.

Ram Charan pulled it off when heroines fail . . .

Actor Ram Charan, son of Chiranjeevi, whose Maaveeran will be hitting the theatres shortly is overwhelmed with the warm reception he received from the Tamil industry. The journos were very surprised when he addressed them in perfect Tamil. Even the director Rajamouli and producer, Allu Aravind spoke in Tamil. This is amazing in an age where most of the heroines can barely string a sentence together in Tamil despite doing so many films in that language. They all received a thunderous applause from the delighted onlookers.

Ram Charan conveyed his gratitude to Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam for their kind words and encouragement. He said he loves Chennai as he spent his younger days in the city and it is close to his heart and hopes there will be more collaboration between the Tamil and Telugu film fraternities.

Priyanka for Prince Mahesh : Mani Ratnam

Mani Ratnam intends to make Ponniyin Selvan in three languages – Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Since this film requires a huge star cast, Mani is planning to cast at least one popular face from each film industry, sources report. While for the Tamil version it will be Vijay, for Telugu it is Mahesh Babu.

Having offered the two important male lead roles to the most popular stars in the Tamil and Telugu film industry, sources say that the director feels that Priyanka Chopra would be the apt choice to appease the Bollywood audiences. She will play Mahesh Babu’s on screen pair in this film while Anushka will be Vijay’s.

Priyanka approached for "Ponniyin Selvan"

If sources from Bollywood are to be believed, hottie Priyanka Chopra has been approached by ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam for his period film Ponniyin Selvan to play one of the female leads.

The actress is not new to K’Town as she has already starred opposite Ilaya Thalapathy Vijay in Tamizhan way back in 2002. Interestingly, Mani roped in Vijay to play the lead protagonist Vandhiyathevan for this multilingual project and the actor’s associates confirmed it to this newspaper.

Reportedly, Anushka has been finalised for one of the female leads and she’ll be seen opposite Vijay. Mahesh Babu is another hero in the film. Apparently, according to the story, Anushka is Mahesh Babu’s sister in the movie. Reports suggest that Mani wants Priyanka to play Mahesh Babu’s love interest.

Actor Arya will also be seen in an important role.It is reliably learnt that Priyanka is excited about working with Mani and will soon be meeting him for a personal discussion.

Though the Fashion star is busy with Bollywood movies, insiders reveal that considering this is a Mani Ratnam film, the actress will not relinquish the opportunity.

The Duo starting from Roja (1992) till Raavanan (2010) has always resulted in producing exceptional music thats magic to the listeners and the upcoming extravagant epic venture Ponniyin Selvan will be magic again only to be in its best form.

Ponniyin Selvan with a cast that is yet to be finalized has A.R. Rahman determined to do his best again for Mani and has already completed five songs. The tunes are said to be outstanding and Mani was moved by his gesture. He seems to have approved the songs and is keen to begin shooting for them as he wants to make them memorable.
