Pop star Lady Gaga continued her crusade for gay rights as she performed in front of thousands at Rome's EuroPride rally.
The 25-year-old made a speech during the rally and performed two songs on her piano, including Born This Way which Gaga says is a self-styled gay anthem, reported Contactmusic.
In her speech, she described homosexuals as 'revolutionaries of love' and pointed out that discrimination against gay people results in thousands of young people across the world being vulnerable to "suicide, self-loathing, isolation".
Gaga praised the 'great courage' of her audience, who had paraded through the streets of Rome in brightly coloured floats and costumes in order to support gay rights and highlight injustices against the gay community.
She also hoped to send a message both to the Vatican, who boldly oppose same sex marriage and adoption, and also to outspoken Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi, who recently claimed that it is "better to be passionate about a beautiful girl than a gay."
Gaga's recent album Born This Way recently sold more than 1 million copies in a single week, and she continues to use her profile to try and change legislation, going as far as formally inviting the US Ambassador to the EuroPride rally.

Three-time Grammy award winner Lady Gaga is taking a keen interest in India. The platinum selling artiste collaborated with Indian movie composers Salim-Sulaiman and created a Bollywood style remix of her single Born this way…, which released earlier this week. The song will be part of her second studio album of the same name and is set to launch worldwide on May 23.
The four-minute filmi track is replete with a sitar intro, dhol beats, dubstep and background voice of Salim with Gaga’s vocal flair.
“Lady Gaga’s record label Interscope contacted us through the Canadian website, Desi Hits with the proposal to remix the song. We produced it and sent it back in 20 days,” explains Sulaiman, who steered clear of typical bhangra beats and attempted to give it a more Bollywood feel instead. “We were specifically told to make it sound like a Hindi movie club number. That’s why we put in the sitar sample and Salim sang the background vocals.”
The music composer further reveals that Gaga has produced another Indian version of Born this way…. “Canadian Punjabi artistes Sunny Brown and Baba Kahn have also produced a mix to suit the UK desi market,” says Sulaiman, before adding that though it is too early to confirm, Lady Gaga may soon be visiting the country for either a concert or to record a Bollywood song.
The 25-year-old songstress too has expressed her eagerness. “I can’t wait to come to India. When Salim-Sulaiman sent me the track, I connected with the dhol and rhythms very well. They’ve done a fabulous job. It’ll be great to meet and work with more musicians like them,” says Lady Gaga.
The Emmy-winning musicians, who’re known to have previously incorporated western, folk, Hindustani and Sufi influences in their music, were an easy choice for Interscope. Tory Carter, head of Gaga’s management team confirms, “We collaborated with Indian music producers from across the globe to show our respect and appreciation for our fans. Desi is a new urban genre that combines traditional Indian music with Western pop and RnB. Salim-Sulaiman were ideal for the job."
There’s always been a scramble among big Bollywood filmmakers to get the best international singing talents for their films, be it Kylie Minogue or Akon. But this time it’s the other way round.
Lady GaGa is seriously looking at Bollywood post the release of her Bollywood inspired hit Born This Way. The singer’s management company has sent out feelers to the Hindi film industry that she’s interested in nurturing her Bollywood connection.
“We collaborated with Indian music producers from across the globe to show our respect and appreciation for our desi fans and music community. We’re looking forward to more desi collaborations in the near future,” says Troy Carter, the head of Atom Factory (the official representative of the singer) in a press statement.
The singer, who’s got the most number of followers on Twitter, has apparently instructed her marketing agency to work out a strategy that enables her to reach out to more Bollywood fans across the globe, especially in UK which has a strong desi connection.
“The debut of these remixed tracks is just the beginning. Lady GaGa has truly fallen in love with India, so we’re helping her pursue this audience to authentically connect with both the huge diaspora, including South Asia,” says Anjula Acharia-Bath CEO of Desi Hits.
The company is reportedly working closely with Lady GaGa and her managers to figure out a “strategy for the South Asian market”, of which Bollywood’s the only flourishing film or music industry. And her latest tweet confirms that. “I worked with some Indian producers on ‘Born this way’ to show all the little monsters in India that I appreciate you!” she tweets.
According to sources, the singer is planning a trip to India, which could possibly lead to a concert here.
“If she’s to come to India, it’s imperative that she has a few Bollywood inspired numbers in her catalogue. You can see that she is on her way to doing that. Don’t be surprised if you find her mouthing a few Hindi words also,” says a source.
