Grapevine has it that the producers of the Hollywood biggie Mission Impossible 4 have apparently preponed the global release date of December 21 to December 16 in India and a few other parts of Asia.

This news has caused much surprise among fans and the industry trade watchers because, if true, the reasons for pre-poning it are unclear.

The expectations over the Tom Cruise starrer have doubled in India ever since the announcement of Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor being a part of the franchise broke out. But the apparent preponement of the release date has fuelled speculation that the producers of the Hollywood flick didn’t want to risk releasing their film in the same weekend as that of Ritesh Sidhwani’s Don 2 that releases worldwide on 23 December starring Shah Rukh Khan.

A source from M:I-4 distributors in India, Viacom 18 refuses to confirm anything. “There will shortly be an announcement about the confirmed release date, and the reasons for doing that. We are not sure if 16 December is the date as there are still closed door meetings on it. The picture will get clear in two or three days,” says the source.

Trade analyst Amod Mehra agrees that though Tom Cruise is huge in Hollywood, a Bollywood film is always preferred over an English one in India. “It is a smart move on their part to have pushed the release to an earlier date.. Producers today prefer a solo weekend where their film can do good business. It is a win-win situation. Besides, if MI4 turns out to be good, then they’ll have the last three weeks, right from 16 December to the New Year to themselves,” he said.

An industry insider however reveals that Don 2 starring SRK is the only reason why a huge franchise like M:I-4 has decided to release their film a week earlier. “Never before has it happened that a film releases in India, before it does in the US, especially when it is a Hollywood film. Tom Cruise is a huge entity, but in India, Shah Rukh Khan is bigger, even if Hollywood franchise stars Anil Kapoor in it.,” he says.

Interestingly, SRK is often referred to as the ‘Tom Cruise of India’ on the global movie front.

The problem with a lot of movie sequels is that they are too similar to the original films. Often at times, they'll copy the plot and style of the first installment so closely they feel more like remakes rather than a standalone film.

But that's never been the case with "Mission: Impossible" ever since Tom Cruise first turned the classic 1960s TV spy show into a big-screen blockbuster 15 years ago.

And while a few key elements have shown up in each sequel -- Cruise, Ving Rhames, identity-concealing masks, and, of course, the theme song -- the subsequent movies have their own look and feel. Each movie had a different director (Brian De Palma, John Woo and J.J. Abrams, respectively) who put their own stamp on the material. And the sequels brought in new costars, exotic locales and hair-raising stunts to try to top the one that came before.

From the looks of the just-released trailer, the fourth film, "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol," could be the most radical departure yet. Cruise returns as IMF secret agent Ethan Hunt, but this time he's backed by a new team that includes the Oscar-nominated star of "The Hurt Locker," Jeremy Renner. The cast also includes Paula Patton ("Precious"), Josh Holloway (TV's "Lost"), and Simon Pegg (the first actor other than Cruise and Rhames to appear in two "M:I" movies).

The added stars mean that Cruise's character isn't doing all the action himself in this movie. The trailer shows Renner dropping down an airshaft on cables, much like Cruise did so memorably in the first movie. And Holloway can be seen running across a rooftop and plummeting to the ground. Even Pegg, who was stuck behind a computer in "Mission: Impossible 3," gets in on the fighting.

Still, Cruise isn't exactly sitting on the sidelines in "Ghost Protocol." The trailer has him running from massive explosions, getting tossed around inside a rolling car, and narrowly avoiding getting squished by another flipping vehicle. And in an already infamous stunt, Cruise can be seen hanging off Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the tallest structure ever built. He really did dangle from wires outside of the building almost 1500 feet in the air.

Naturally, the movie crosses the globe, filming in the United Arab Emirates, Russia, India, and the Czech Republic.

Ghost Protocol also has an international cast of villains, including Anil Kapoor ("Slumdog Millionaire"), Michael Nyqvist ("The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo") and Léa Seydoux ("Robin Hood"). Plus, some scenes in the movie were shot on IMAX cameras, so the big scenes will fill up the giant-sized screens like in "The Dark Knight."

"Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" also breaks new ground by being the first live-action movie directed by Brad Bird. Formerly a director of animated films for Pixar, Bird won Academy Awards for his movies "The Incredibles" and "Ratatouille." It's very unusual for a "first-time" director to get the reins of a big-budget action spectacle like this, but it's not the first time. J.J. Abrams also hadn't directed a feature when he made "M:I3," and he went on to have hits with "Star Trek" and "Super 8."

"Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" drops into theaters and IMAX on December 16. Watch the brand-new trailer for the movie below.

Katie Holmes threw a surprise party for husband Tom Cruise a day before his birthday.

Cruise turned 49 on July 3 and Holmes, 32, planned to celebrate it with a secret dinner party for 40 of their closest friends at the SoHo Beach House in Miami, People magazine reported.

"Katie planned everything herself," said a source. The bash took place on the roof and inside the private venue and guests enjoyed pasta, shrimp and other Italian dishes, in addition to a chocolate birthday cake.

"Katie has been very excited and actually did the RSVPs herself. She wanted to be sure everything was just right," the source added.

Tom Cruise celebrated his 49th birthday on Sunday with a surprise party thrown by wife Katie Holmes.

Katie threw Tom's soiree inside and on the rooftop of SoHo Beach House, a private members club and hotel located in Miami.

"There were over three dozen of the star's friends in attendance of the party incluring his children Isabella, Connor and Suri who enjoyed Italian food and shrimp with chocolate birthday cake for dessert. Katie had planned everything herself including making the RSVPs herself to be sure that everything was just right." reported the source.

Tom's fourth installment of the Mission Impossible Franchise is expected to release in December with its trailer creating the hype required to welcome IMF Agent Ethan Hunt back on the big screen. Tom is currently filming the movie adaption of the musical "Rock of Ages" in Florida that will hit theaters on June 1, 2012.
